Tina’s Tidbits Week of June 9th, 2013 Whirlwinds of Destruction I cannot believe the number of tornadoes and other destructive weather that has been happening across the United States just in the last month alone. Thankfully we have a lot more warning devices available to us now than in previous years that helps keep the fatalities down but it still does not help in the matter of homes and property destroyed. Life is far more important than property but sometimes it is hard to be thankful when you see you no longer have a home to live in and feel safe. But it is important to be thankful everyday you can wake up and see that everything is still in one piece. When bad things happen, it is good to know that there are friends, families, and organizations that are willing to help. But before bad weather strikes, especially a tornado, it is good to have a checklist of things you should have. Christian Science Monitor had an interesting article written by Pete Spotts that has a tornado checklist and tornado myths to ignore. The article can be found at csmonitor/USA/2011/0418/Tornado-checklist-What-to-do-and-what-myths-to-ignore/Know-where-to-go-what-to-bring-and-who-to-tell. Of course one of the best sites to get disaster information is from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). Check out this site for great natural disaster preparedness information (ready.gov/be-informed). Do you have a plan in place if a natural disaster should strike? Plan for the Man? On a more positive note, Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 16th and I was wondering if you already know what you are going to do for that special dad or granddad. If you are still not sure, many restaurants have special promotions for dads, much like they do for Mother’s Day. For a head start check out freebies.about/od/freeholidayfun/tp/fathers-day-freebies.htm?nl=1 which has special Father’s Day deals at TCBY, Spaghetti Warehouse, IKEA, and Redbox to name a few. The Gift of Literacy Lasts Forever If the dad, granddad, or husband likes to read, the Friends of the Carrollton Library is holding their spring book sale June 14th and 15th. The sale will be held from 10am-6pm at the Josey Ranch Lake Library (1700 Keller Springs, Carrollton, TX 75006). Prices range from twenty-five cents to $2, depending on the item. This would be a great way to do something special on Father’s Day and help your local library as well. More information can be found at friendscarrolltonlibrary.org/booksale.htm. Cool Treat on a Hot Day If you prefer homemade gifts to store bought then you might want to try this easy, refreshing, and cool dessert that is bound to cool anyone down on a hot day. It is a three step recipe for ice cream bread. For chocolate chip ice cream bread all you need is vanilla ice cream, self rising flour, and chocolate chips. If you are lucky you may be able to find all three at the dollar stores that sell food items. Author Kelsey Banfield writes a family cooking blog called The NapTime Chef (thenaptimechef/) and she shared this recipe at shine.yahoo/shine-food/melt-mouth-ice-cream-bread-3-easy-steps-161800677.html. I always enjoy running across personal blogs like this because I find some great ideas to try and share with others. Do you have a favorite blog? I hope everyone has a great rest of the week and a Happy Father’s Day to those of you who are a dad, have a dad, a spouse or significant other who you want to celebrate with. I look forward to sharing more tidbits with you next week and I always enjoy when you share yours by sending me an email at tinahager147@yahoo or leaving me a note on Facebook at facebook/mstinaknows.
