Tip: Are you finding that your handmade candles are going out, the wick drowning in the pooling wax? A properly prepared wick should curl into the flame but should remain upright rather than sinking into the melting wax. If you are making candles at home, soak the wick in a solution of 2 cups of water, 2 tbsp coarse salt or other nonadditive salt, and 4 tbsp. borax. Simmer for 1 hour. Allow to cool naturally and hang to dry. Then your wicks will curl appropriately into the flame without drowning in the wax, being self trimming.
