Tip from RCE Some may let the tree leaves blow to the neighbors. I like to shred the leaves in place to help out my landscape. Research at Michigan State University showed no ill effect by using a mulching mower to shred up to about one pound of leaves per square yard of lawn (one pound is equal to approximately 6 inches of leaves piled on the grass) for five consecutive years. Extra shredded leaves can be worked into the vegetable or flower garden soil. They make a good cover for any bare soil. The compost bin is another alternative. Leaves sent to the transfer station will be composted. Collect leaves that end up in the street and on the curb. These leaves are beneficial to our environment when put back into the soil. Leaves left to go into the storm drain and then into streams and lakes become pollutants. Gardeners are always touting the addition of organic matter. Leaves and other organic materials are readily available right now.
