Tip of the Day - Canvas - So you bought stretched canvas and started a painting but youve given up hope on it looking like you wanted it to. What do you do? First - never destroy a perfectly good canvas. Second - Recycle. There are many brands of stretched canvases on the market but it basically falls into two categories. Economy and premium. Economy is your basic canvas, usually thin with light wood and one coat of gesso. Premium is usually a thicker canvas, heavier wood and three coats of gesso. So how do you save a canvas that you want to reuse. Sand down any ridges and apply gesso. Its that simple. I have on many occasions scrapped a project and salvaged the canvas. You can apply the gesso with a brush but I have found that a good roller works just as well, especially on larger canvases. Depending on the darkness of the paint your trying to cover you may have to use multiple coats. Have fun.
