Tip of the Day - Cape Hatteras - Lets leave our sandpipers for now and move over to the water. For this were going to layer four different colors in a random pattern moving with the motion of the water making sure that we utilize the dips and peaks of the rolling water to our advantage to simulate movement. We are going to use cerulean blue, phthalo blue, medium green and violet. Make sure and leave light areas the closer you get to the shoreline and increase your darker colors the further you move away from the shore. Make sure you dont paint the areas where the reflections of the sandpipers are going to be and the slight crests of the rolling waves. The light areas of the water are going to be sea foam as it rolls onto the beach. Once the blues and violets of the water are complete use some cobalt blue mixed with a small amount of burnt umber for the shore where the waves touch. This will be our wet sand created my the withdrawing waves. Dont take these to far inland. Just a slight area should do. Make sure and dry this area and the water completely before beginning the next step. Painting white gouache on a wet surface will cause the white to appear dull and chalky. Once you have completely dried the area take a dry brush (Im using my 18/0 detail brush) and take some white gouache straight from the tube. Working in small circular motions begin working in your foam separating where the water meets the wet sand. You can even add a few small areas on the wet sand where the the foam has remained on the sand. Also take a little of the white gouache and touch up the top crests or the waves. (to be continued)
