Tip of the Day - In the field - When working in the field, my sketch book and pencils arent all I take with me but I want to travel as light as possible. Heres my personal checklist: one sketch book, one kneaded eraser, one mechanical pencil, a pencil sharpener, a bottle of drinking water and a small carrying case with a couple of brushes and watercolor pencils. I usually dont do finished paintings in the field, I wait until Im in my studio or at shows. When Im in the field its usually for inspiration. I just need a quick sketch. I use my watercolor pencils because its easier than carrying a bunch of tubes that may burst or leak. Then I use my brushes and the bottle of drinking water to complete a quick color study. This allows you to get a good solid sketch and color study all in one which is why I insist on buying sketch books that have a good thick paper. You cant learn everything from your studio so get out there and enjoy the day. Have fun.
