Tip of the Day - Reflectives - No, not reflections, reflectives. When painting we have to keep everything in mind. We are, for the most part illusionists. We use a few brush strokes to try and fool the eye. Think about it. When we paint a distant bird in flight we use 3 maybe 4 brush strokes and 2 or 3 colors. Yet when people look at it they dont say look at the brush strokes, they say look at the bird. Reflectives is light and color at play. When light hits and object and reflects onto another object we call it reflective light. When a color is near another color and reflects one color onto another we call it reflective color. I took a picture of a banana to demonstrate. I had the banana on a blue cloth. The light source is in the upper left. Since light can pass through a small portion of the skin you will notice that the shadow where light and dark meet glows orange. A beautiful effect. Down where the paper meets the banana you will notice a thin blue green area running the length of the banana, thats your reflective color. The banana is also reflecting a little yellow into the shadow of the cloth. Add this to your painting and it springs to life. Remember reflective color is dependent upon size, texture and distance. Its all relative. Just for study purposes take two items like a banana and a red apple, set them in the sun and view them. Move them closer and further apart taking note to the changes in the reflective colors. Makes notes of these during your sketches so you can remember to put them in your painting. Have fun.
