Tip of the Day: Efficient warmup- This one is for all you coaches out there, so If you players think Im right make sure you LIKE this post. The days of running a couple laps and stretching for 10-15 minutes are over. In juniors volleyball you only have 2 hour time slots normally, so you want to be efficient in those two hours and keep the kids engaged from start to finish. Im a big fan of using an agility ladder and some small exercises such as lunges, squats with a ball in between the knees and some dynamic movements which will make your kids sweat and also help with quickness and reducing injuries. When you have a slow warmup with a couple laps and stretching the kids talk about nothing volleyball related so their mind is not into practice so it takes another 15 minutes of you, the coach, trying to push and motivate them and you have already wasted 30 minutes of practice. I have always said that the more engaged you can keep your kids minds at the beginning of practice the better the practice will be. Its so important once you have that upbeat warmup that you move into something after it that will keep the sweat going and mind engaged such as a deep court correction or russian pepper. Keep that practice moving all the way throughout the two hours. Running an efficient practice is a for of art but once you are able to do it the better your team is going to be and more importantly the more fun they will have playing the game of volleyball!!
