Tip of the Day: Robin Fellows writes about the teachings of Joseph Mariano: He used to describe it (playing between the notes) like a sandwich. If you played two notes without bridging the interval between them, itd be like a sandwich without meat in the middle--just two pieces of bread and nothing binding them together. He would have you play slow scales slurred, then detache. You had to be extremely careful how you released each note of the scale and bridged it into the next note.
