Tip of the Day: The basic cueing motion is the downbeat. A downbeat cannot exist in a vacuum and requires an upbeat to be operative. To give this upbeat, flutists should start with the end of the flute rather lower than usual, then raise the end and bring it down decisively, with an ictus at the bottom, just as a conductor would with a baton.
