Tip of the Week: Most people think the best punch is a hooking punch, and often they think the wider the more powerful. Wide, haymaker style punches are easier to spot, defend, and counter. For self defense, often the best punch is a straight punch. Not a jab, but a strong, straight punch. Why? First, its hard to defend. When it comes straight at you, depth perception is more difficult to discern since all you can see is the front of the fist. Second, since its a straight line punch, it has a shorter distance to follow and therefore quicker. Third, It can carry just as much if not more power than a hook if the elbow is kept behind the wrist. Good arm alignment can make the straight punch a knockout blow when used properly. Check out our classes and see for yourself how well a straight punch can work for you!
