Tip of the day...............Living with a dog is obviously not - TopicsExpress

Tip of the day...............Living with a dog is obviously not the same as bringing up a child. However, there as some similarities. When owners call me about certain behaviours - for example barking at the gate of the property, had two of those this week, the solution actually comes down to the nature of your relationship with that dog. If you are lucky, the odd gizmo will stop the behaviour but more often than not, the dog learns to ignore the spray or whatever you are using and goes back to the behaviour. We would not dream of allowing our children to repeatedly do things that are innapropriate, however with our dogs we often just stand by and watch or worse, think the behaviour is somehow amusing - until it isnt! Whilst you cannot have a conversation with your dog and explain why a behaviour is not acceptable you can have a balanced relationship based on rules that start on day one and remain unchanging. Dogs like our children need us to provide boundaries, it is not enough to simply lavish affection on them and then throw up our hands in exasperation when they do what comes naturally. Yes I am a behaviourist and yes I can help, but I am not a magician. You are having the relationship with your dog not me so you have to make sure that relationship is balanced. I can show you how, but you have to rleate to your dog consistently.
