Tippett looks for another shot afl.au - Harry Thring October 14, 2013 4:38 PM A SERIES of “phenomenal” test results at the weekend’s South Australian screening has done star SANFL defender Joel Tippett’s NAB AFL Draft chances a world of good. The 24-year-old younger brother of Sydney Swans forward Kurt registered the highest vertical leap, the second best time in the agility course and third in the 20m sprint and 30m repeat sprints. His time for the agility course (8.00 seconds) would have ranked him second at the recently completed Draft Combine and his 20m sprint would have had him inside the top 10. Port Adelaide recruiting manager Geoff Parker told afl.au Tippetts results were phenomenal. I didnt think he was that athletic – put it that way, Parker said of the 197cm, 96kg Tippett. For a player of his size to run that 2.92 second 20m sprint - and even in the agility to test to run an 8 second – thats phenomenal really. You watch him play and you think oh yeah, he moves alright, but to actually get those test results you think he might actually be a bit better that you thought. Tippett has developed into perhaps the SANFLs most imposing full back since joining West Adelaide in late 2011, crossing from Gold Coast where he played two AFL games. The 2013 state representative didnt attempt the beep test due to sore ribs. Adelaides recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie was impressed by Tippetts results and said they suggested he was almost in AFL nick, but wouldnt comment on the Crows interest in the big defender. And while the results raised Parkers eyebrows, he admitted the Power were content with their key defender stocks. But while there might not be room at the club for another big defender, Parker said such test results ensured Tippett would be looked at closely by club recruiters ahead of November’s NAB AFL Draft. Were pretty settled with our tall defenders in (Alipate) Carlile, (Jackson) Trengove, (Tom) Jonas, (Jack) Hombsch. We drafted (Tom) Clurey last year, so weve actually got quite a few, he said. But hes played good footy in SA for two years and he tested well so youve got to take a bit of notice.
