Tips & Tricks to Stay Nutritionally Smart This Halloween from Ashley Pettit Living Tip #1: Avoid the main myths Non- or Low-Fat, No-Sugar, or Mini-Size is not always best when it comes to health. The bad stuff is still there, just replaced with different (often “faux” food or chemicals) words under “ingredients” and a different size wrapper. Tip #2: Homemade is always best You can control what you make and therefore, what you eat! Bake some treats and wrap them in individual bags for portion control AND a fun activity Tip #3: Aim for high quality, bite-size candy Whether you are giving out or sifting through your lot, dark chocolate like Godiva, Dove, or any small, wrapped brand, is best for the health and nutritional benefits. Aim for a small portion of something with 70% of cacao. An ounce of dark chocolate a day keeps the doctor away…(I know, I know, and apples…) Tip #4: Forget the fruity items People often assume the fruit candies are better because they taste lighter thanks to their usually jelly-like consistency. They are not better! In fact, people tend to eat more of them to satiate their sweet tooth, so the damage is far worse. Tip #5: Add in another Flywheel class or two during the week of Halloween in case you overdo it!
