Tips for Essay writing - For IAS Aspirants 1. Generally Three types of essays are being asked i. Socio-Economic, Socio-political ii. Technical –like Environment, Energy, Biodiversity, Disaster Management etc. iii. Reflective- based on human nature, values, virtues etc. 2. Select at least two from the above areas 3. Hunt for relevant materials from at least three different sources like Economic and Political Weekly, Yojna and articles written by eminent scholars/experts/journalist/authors etc. ( search and read recent articles of Ramchandra Guha, Mahesh Rangrajan , Madhav Gadgil,Harsh Mander, Andre Battelle, Dipankar Gupta, M.J.Akbar, Vinod Mehta, Daleep Padgaonkar, Shekhar Gupta, Sitaram Yetchuri, Jairam Ramesh, Shahsi Throor, Mani Shankar Aiyyar, N.Ram, and articles written by recently retired bureaucrats. 4. Read at least 20 articles from the chosen area, and take out relevant points 5. Conceptualize a topic in a statement form and start practicing 6. Before writing- make a plan for an essay- i. An introduction- like preamble of Indian constitution ii. All the relevant points in correct order-The most important at top and likewise. iii. Each point must have a view point supported by facts and argument iv. The points must be interwoven and shall follow each other logically v. Facts must be 100% correct, taken from authentic govt. and International sources like UNO. Else, write approximately vi. Avoid generalization of any kind and never make a sweeping remarks vii. Write small sentences viii.Must write a conclusion ix. Demonstrate life, energy, passion, enthusiasm and hope in your essay 7. Write at least three essays and get it evaluated from an experts and ask for marks with remarks 8.
