~ Tips for Managing Energy! ~ Living with a high energy dog can be tiring and draining, not to mention frustrating. This is Cory and he is a high energy Boxer. I got to spend the day with him today after his owner contacted me when his behaviour deteriorated. Admittedly, his daily routines and exercise have been lacking so today I worked on some ways to help Cory and his owner figure out how to manage his energy, especially when they are time-poor. Here are some tips: * Firstly, never over-exercise the dog, you will only ever achieve making it fitter and thus more energetic. Short, moderately intense exercise reaching the aerobic threshold is the key; working your dog for 30 - 40 minutes twice a day is far better than one big long session for 1.5 hours. * Treadmills are great; they can be used to challenge your dog mentally and are helpful to allow your dog to do a longer walk without you burning out. Use the treadmill to start the walk for 15 minutes and then you leash up and finish it for another 20minutes. * Doggy Back Packs or Saddle Packs are great; they can be used with weights (Cory was carrying 2.5kg), ice packs for warm weather, to carry your water bottle, car keys and wallet etc. This is a great way to slow a high energy dog down and get them working. * Bike rides; I love using the bike when I am time poor. 15 minutes at a steady pace on the bike is worth 35-40minutes walking. Get riding people, dogs love it! So here are some ways to help owners living with a high energy dog. Manage the dogs energy and, no matter what the behavioural issue is, its intensity will be reduced or removed. Love this fella lots; Cory is welcome here anytime, we have a real family connection with Boxers!!! TDF
