Tips for photographing tombstones: Documentary photos of gravestones should be made only in brilliant sunlight. The west side of a stone receives the best light (at an angle of about 30 degrees from the side or top of the stone) from about 12:30 to 1:30 pm Standard time. Stones facing north are sunlit in the late afternoon in midsummer. Stones facing south are favorably lit all day in midsummer. If you cant wait for the sun, use a mirror to reflect sunlight at an angle. From Making Photographic Records of Gravestones, Daniel and Jessie Lie Farber.
