Tips from The Retreat Pro Shop: Course Management/Favorite Yardage Find out what your favorite yardage is to hit your approach shots. From the tee box on par 4’s determine how far you need to hit your tee shot. A driver may not be the best club in some cases to leave the ball at your favorite yardage. On most par 5’s the calculation should take place prior to the second shot. Some par 5’s can be reached in two by some of the longer hitters. Many courses have par 4’s and par 5’s which are considered risk or reward holes. The green may be reached one shot short of regulation, but there may be a price to pay if you miss, such as a water hazard or high rough. This may result in a penalty stroke and or a lost ball. A lost ball outside of a hazard penalty is stroke and distance. Is the cost of an errant shot worth the risk?
