Tips from The Retreat Pro Shop: Greenside Bunkers Greenside bunkers – According to Dave Pelz the average greenside bunker shot is 14 yards. The shot is played similar to a lob shot. Play the ball slightly forward in your stance. Open the clubface and then take your grip. Take your stance slightly open to your target line. Swing through toward your target. The club will enter the sand approximately 2 inches behind the ball and the sand will carry the ball out of the bunker. Sometimes you may find your ball in a bunker 50 – 60 yards from the green. Try taking a 9 iron and use more of a sweeping motion moving along the ground. The club should be skimming across the top of the sand. As mentioned above, open your club face before taking your grip. Using the same set up as in a greenside bunker the golf ball may curve left to right for a right hander. If the sand is firm, the golf ball will come out faster and slower in fluffy sand. Practice these shots to learn how to control the distance. Also experiment with how much you open the club to control the trajectory of the shot. Please remember a bunker is considered a hazard and grounding the club in the bunker will result in a 2 stroke penalty. Reminder: Groups of 5 are not allowed before noon on weekends. “Maintain a childhood enthusiasm for the game of golf.” - Chi Chi Rodriguez
