Tips to Increase Self Esteem in Children Positive Adjective Game Write your child’s name on a piece of paper in a vertical line so there is space after each letter to fit a couple words. For each letter of their name have them think of a positive adjective that they think fits their personality. Have them explain why they chose that particular adjective. If they cant seem to think of any feel free to help them and explain to them why you chose those adjectives. This is a fun activity to do alone with your child or as a family activity where everyone gives each other positive adjectives. Looking at Low and High Self Esteem Qualities Have your child think of one person they admire and have them keep it a secret. Then ask them to tell you one quality they admire in that person. Write down this quality and make a list of other admirable qualities that show high self-esteem. After make a list of low self esteem qualities. Compare the lists. Goal Setting When your child needs help boosting their self-esteem you can teach them goal setting steps to help achieve their personal goals. Step 1: Set Reachable Goal Step 2: Write out clear and defined ways to achieve the goal Step 3: Keep going until your child reaches the goal Step 4: Give yourself a reasonable timetable. These things take time! Step 5: Evaluate progress and make adjustments if needed Step 6: Compliment your child each step of the way Find Good Hobbies It’s not uncommon for a child to be involved in numerous after school activities these days. While it’s great for a child to be exposed to many things its important to focus on the activities that they are most interested in and talented in. Being good at something they enjoy will help build self-esteem. Reviewing Compliments A child with low self-esteem can find it difficult to accept compliments. Part of high self-esteem is giving and receiving compliments. As a family sit down and discuss what a compliment is- saying something positive about someone that is true. Each participant gets two sheets of paper and will choose two family members to write five compliments. Make sure to use I messages, for example instead of saying “you are a good friend” say “ I like talking to you”. You can share these as a family.
