** Tips to the Political Candidates / Parties 2014 ** Part 7... United St. Maarten Party Meeting 3 – Philipsburg...August 13th, 2014 Presentation: No Gathering: Low Interaction with crowd: Yes On Time starting: No (scheduled 8.00pm) (started 8.45pm) NOTE: 1. Kudos to all the brave candidates that made this giant step, you have made one step greater than anyone else. 2. Positive Critics, not bashing 3. Comments are welcome, keep it real and positive 4. If incorrect, please inbox me, corrections will be applied 5. Posting will be across the board for all parties. 6. If you was not to the meeting, and responding via hear say, make sure you have good facts. 7. Remember we want professionals in Parliament, people that when they speak to the world, it reflects on St. Maarten 8. Will monitor if tips falls on deaf ears, remember they can help you with a vote, people are listening #11 Sergio Bryson You pointed out some good issues that we are facing; High bills, budget cuts, education system, unemployment. You brought not proposed solutions. Do some research. Sergio, next time make sure you prepare yourself to say all you want to say when you are allowed to speak and not during someone else’s allotted time. Although you did bring some good points forward the second time around #12 Curtis Thomas Your issues brought forward are good: Prison situation – Guards and Inmates, Fire Department, Police. So far, we think you are the only candidate who has touched on the issues in these areas so far. Good job. Next time research some possible solutions and bring them forward. #8 Fernando Clark You are used to facing the public so there was no fright in that area. But you spoke nothing relevant concerning the issues. A bit of bashing. You brought no solutions. #2 Leona Marlin You spoke well as was expected of you. Spoke about making sure our education is above average. Spoke about social reform. You spoke about your party’s proposal of instituting a “living wage” as opposed to the “minimum wage”. Good job in clarifying one of the legislation made by our elected Parliamentarians which is that the Electoral Ordinance Article 43 states: that “the voting cards must be in the possession of the voters a minimum of 8 days before elections”. #10 Myrna Richardson You gave no preliminary introduction. You didn’t come as if you were very prepared. (Could be stage fright – who knows). But you regained your composure and brought forward some issues but your solutions were not elaborate. Do remember to promote yourself, in the form of Elect Candidate nr. 10 etc, etc #9 Earl Duzong You are well knowledgeable in the areas of the issues you discussed: Youth Affairs / Sports / The Arts. You also gave some possible ideas. Expound on these more in the next meeting. One of your solutions is to enforce proper maintenance on the buildings that we use for these activities. #5 Lisa Alexander You got lost in your prepared speech, so bullet points may work better for you. You need to be a little more forceful. You gave good idea concerning the rights of the citizens. You were getting on a hype when your speech was cut through by Sergio Bryson . Be positive, use the word when and not If elected. #3 Ana Rabess – Richardson Great speaker. It is good when suggestions that are made are taken. You got rid of the paper and you did really good job of in your presentation. You had a good introduction. Good suggestions of bring control in the supermarket. You also touched on the “living wage” as opposed to a “minimum wage”. Expound more on the St. Maarten Interscholastic Federation that you talked about – a proposed solution to assist our education system. With the experience you gained from living abroad, that helped too. We clearly see that you went all out and made a perfect change since our recommendations were made. We are so happy at least we saw the change in you. Told you that you are a powerful speaker without the paper, and you did prove us right. #7 Richnel Brug A burst of energy. Good introduction and presentation. Good knowledge of situation. Take your time when you speak. There is no rush. It avoids you from making simple mistakes. Bring some proposed solutions to the issues you mentioned. Somehow we have the feeling that your emotions are high which makes you sounds like you are fighting with someone on stage. We dont need that in parliament. Do some practice runs during the day time. #15 L. Paul You were emotional, but you spoke well. You touched on the labor situation and exploitation - a good issue to bring forward. You brought one suggestion of how to create jobs to eliminate the off season. Research some more possible (workable) solutions and bring them forth. Your speech went a bit too long for the average person. It can start getting boring after the core-contents were already delivered. #4 Ruben Thompson One of the issues you spoke about was Environment issue was your passion - the hill in the middle of town - poisoning our people. Good issue - not much talked about, if ever, since the campaigning going on. You talked about relationships breaking up, but that fathers still have to support their children. This is also a big social ill. You have to bring solutions to these problems that we are facing, possible consequences for these actions. How we will eliminate it,and what can be done. Other issues discussed - health, education, 6-months contract - but no proposed solution - limit your speaking time. Too long is also not good. #6 Harlec Doran In spite of how you felt, you spoke well. Good idea to have introduced yourself. The people need to get familiar with who the candidates are, especially the new ones. You touched on several issues: education, youth, youth unemployment, but no solutions. Do some research. General Observation: The candidates did a very good job considering that most are new to politics. They represented themselves well and spoke well. This is the type of presentation we need to see among our young candidates. Some spoke without a paper. Some used bullet points. That’s good. They touched on some issues that other parties have not mentioned. Continue doing research so that the people can be informed and understand what solutions can be proposed. Suggestions for research:Talk to people with knowledge in the area you want to talk about. Ask questions to the general population. You might be very surprised that the solutions for the people come from the people. Remember ALL candidates on ALL the parties are presenting themselves to become an elected Member of Parliament. It is good to let the people of St. Maarten know that you are able to represent them in government. It is good idea that if candidates stuck to 1 or 2 issues and expound on these. No one expects you to know everything. A word to the candidates: Everyone is speaking about the same issues in different ways. Revise your party Manifesto and try to tackle some of the other issues. They may seem insignificant, but they are there. As was mentioned, there are a lot more issues that people can relate to instead of hearing the same ones all the time. An attempt to explain a bit what the Party Leader, MP Frans Richardson explained about the living wage. MP Frans Richardson said that the living wage is making a study of the cost of living on the island and how much it really costs to live including rent/mortgage, electricity bills, grocery bills, and to have the basic necessities. This will determine what would be the best what is the best minimum wage to set for the population. Propose manner of speech. 1. Introduce yourself (to every district) 2. Summarize the issues/problems at hand (per global or per district) (You can mention 1 or 2 that you are familiar with. If you want to touch on a delicate issue, research your information.) 3. Propose your solution/idea (Talking to the people you meet along the way goes a long way in helping you.) 4. Closing. Rueben J.
