Tis the season of sweet corn and butter beans in Virginia. Ive been making regular treks to The Veggie Stand for Gallmeyer Farms Sweet Corn but my trips have picked up since Steve announced last Monday that butter beans had arrived in all their glory. I was introduced to corn and butter beans, or rather Corn IN Butter beans, by Bah, my fellas grandma, in Emporia VA.. Bah was a heck of a cook and a talented musician. She played piano and organ every single Sunday at church. When I first started coming to Virginia 20 years ago, she was spry and always busy. After losing her husband, Bah slowed down a little but was always up for preparing a home cooked meal for us when we came to town. Shed serve ham, chicken and gravy with diced boiled egg stirred into the gravy, green beans, the aforementioned butter beans and corn, biscuits or rolls and lots of sweet tea. Coffee and sweet potato pie followed every dinner. One of my most prized possessions is her copy of The High Hills Baptist Church Cookbook. Bahs name is listed in nearly every recipe category. So when Steve announced butter beans were in, I make a special trip down to The Veggie Stand to pick some up along with Steves excellent corn. As I prepared my corn to go IN my butter beans, I thought of Bah. To this day, on special holidays, I chop boiled egg and sprinkle it into my chicken gravy for my fella...and for Bah. A few years ago, at 87, Bah called church and said she didnt feel well enough to play the morning service but shed be there for the evening service. Later that day, someone checked on her and found shed passed away. She passed away lying in bed reading her Bible. Someday, youll be a memory. Strive to make what you do, whether its great or small, truly matter. Prepare your food with love. Live your life with grace and dignity. And try corn IN your butter beans. Bah would be proud of you.
