Title: ABU Signs MOU with Etisalat on Telecom Engineering Ahmadu Bello University has signed a memorandum of understanding with Etisalat Nigeria in collaboration with Plymouth University of United Kingdom to facilitate the commencement of MSc. Programme in Telecommunication Engineering. Speaking at the flag off ceremony to culminate signing of the M.O.U, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha stated that signing of the M.O.U which was unilaterally agreed upon by the management of the ABU and that of Huawei in collaboration with Plymouth University, was facilitated by a consultant, Professor Munzali Jubril, which paved the way to kick start the commencement of MSc programme in Telecommunications Engineering, the first of its kind in any Nigerian University. According to him, Ahmadu Bello University had over the years been accommodative to multilateral engagement, with key stakeholders in the business of intellectual production and positive building for the larger purpose of human capital development. Professor Mustapha said that Etisalat Nigeria made the first move in soliciting the cooperation of the University to lend the MSc programme in telecommunication engineering, which he said the University management welcomed the idea and expressed appreciation to the company for the huge financial investment as well as to the Plymouth University for its intellectual magnanimity. The Vice-Chancellor assured the partnering organizations of optimum cooperation and pledged to work in accordance with the schedule as contained in the provision and extant of the MOU. He then reiterated A.B.U commitment to collaborate with their partners within the scope and quality outline in the various schedules of agreement to achieve excellent result. He then assured the company and all those willing to support educational pursuit in the University, that Ahmadu Bello University did not only welcome such collaborations but also provided a home for them. He also thanked the Mangement of Etisalat for the huge financial investment which he said would go a long way in providing quality education to Nigerians, and commended Professor Munzali Jibril for his effort that facilitated the signing of the MOU. In his address, the Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Steve Evans, stated that their decision to partner with ABU was based on the recommendations of the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) which assessed academic contents, as well as staff and physical facilities and the quality of the University Library. According to him, Ahmadu Bello University was one of the twenty eight (28) universities with fully accredited status and one of the oldest and best rated universities offering electrical engineering. He expressed appreciation to Huawei for supplying the equipment for the MSc progrmme, which would facilitate the commencement of the MSc in Telecommunication engineering. In a related development, Ahmadu Bello University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Insurance Commission in the area of promoting insurance education. Speaking during singing of the MOU, the National Insurance Commissioner, Mr. Fola Daniel, urged the benefiting institutions to make judicious use of the intervention funds, by working according to the terms of reference of the agreement. He explained that Ahmadu Bello University received the highest amount of over Ninety three Million naira. According to the Insurance Commissioner, the selection of the various universities and polytechnics for the financial support was done based on statistics on ground and past contributions of such institutions towards insurance education. On his part, Vice-Chancellor Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha thanked the Commission for selecting ABU among beneficiaries of the grant and assured them of judicious use of the funds to produce needed manpower in the insurance sector. The Vice-Chancellor signed the MOU on behalf of the University, while Mr. Fola Daniel singed for the commission.
