To All Organizations and individuals concerned about Climate Change and its consequences in South Asia Dear friends/ comrades, The meeting of a number of comrades involved - in different ways – held at New Delhi on 27th September on the issues concerning the state of the Himalayas, the pattern of development practiced there over the last 5-6 decades, the increasing threat and incidences of more and stronger disasters as a combination of a changing climate and reckless destruction of the fragile ecosystems participated in a day long discussion on these issues and on how to combat and defeat the Climate Change caused by the so-called development schemes taken up by the present ruling system internationally and in India. The participants noted that many articles and books have been written, some research done on these - both by official agencies and by civil society organizations (CSOs). Debates have been organised and petitions submitted. Some - packaged or otherwise - solutions, have been offered from these distilled expertise. Yet, there is no end or no major change or even any reduction in the intensifying Climate Change caused by the ecological destruction as same kind of development perspective which causes ecological destruction is pursued. In this meeting (which may be called 27th September New Delhi Initiative for the time being) the Bhu Thatha Paryavaran Sangharsh Abhiyan of Nepal took the responsibility to organize a parallel program on Climate Change and its consequences on the Himalayas region and in South Asia in general, at Kathmandu from 24th to 26th November during the SAARC summit as follows: 1. 24th November - Climate change impacts on South-Asian nations - from extreme climate events, and the role of Governments and peoples organizations; Apart from the scientific & political analysis, testimonies from people from Climate Change linked disaster affected areas - like Uttarakhand, Nepal, Himachal, Bihar, Bangladesh ...... 2. 25th November - How Corporatization of global economies is leading to ecological disaster, 3. On 26th first half, – Presentation of papers and discussion on Climate policies and development paradigm needed to prevent ecological disaster on Earth; In the 2nd half, a demonstration and presentation of demand charter to SAARC leaders. The Beyond Copenhagen Collective may organize programs on Climate Change crisis - broad issues, 3 programs during the Peoples SAARC on 22-24 Nov, just before the SAARC summit. We are appealing to you/ your organization to submit papers and to participate in the program and to join the movement for protection of ecology and to save from the catastrophes witnessed in the Trans Himalayas region and South Asia as part of the global consequences of Climate Change.
