To: All employees of Royal Philips Rob de Nijsar colleague, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines on Friday 8 November, causing catastrophic damage. It is the strongest storm ever to make landfall, hitting an area where thousands of people were already left homeless after an earthquake in mid-October. The 300-mile wide typhoon has left a trail of destruction with thousands feared dead and millions affected. The full extent of the damage will become clearer in the next few days as rescue teams reach the more remote areas. Thankfully all our Philips employees are safe, although relatives of our staff have lost their homes. We are, however, very concerned for the staff of one of our Lighting distributors on Tacloban where several employees are still missing and a warehouse was destroyed. In response, Philips will donate 100,000 Euros to the International Red Cross to provide immediate aid to the people most in need. In addition to financial support, we will be organizing the donation of medical equipment and relief supplies to the disaster areas. Across APAC, the teams will start fund-raising efforts and are planning to send products for relief, as well as reconstruction efforts. All employees are welcome to donate, and we suggest that donations are given directly to your local Red Cross or Red Crescent organization as they are one of the only charities already operational on the ground. Our thoughts go out to the people and communities suffering and we will continue to closely monitor the situation and may well initiate further aid efforts.
