To Be Real in a World of Objects ␣ The opposite of Real human beings are Objects. Object people worry not only about appearance, but also about how others judge their jobs, their mates and their homes. They believe the cars they drive send a certain message to friends and neighbors. They prefer clothes from certain designer stores. They even demand that their children act and dress in a way that reflects well on them. The mere thought of someone noticing a personal flaw, or realizing that they are simply having a problem, is a cause of constant concern. Velveteen Principle #1: Real is Possible ␣ Real waits inside all of us. You can see this truth in very young children. They are Real. ␣ Most of us lose touch with this spirit as we move through life and come under the influence of the Object culture. Many of us adopt a mask of conformity, which we wear as we move through a world in which everyone wears a mask too. ␣ Many of us have trouble finding jobs that allow us to express our true values and talents. Work is a place where many people feel disappointed, empty and unfulfilled, even though they are supposed to feel successful.
