To JMSB Executive Administration: I am writing to you - TopicsExpress

To JMSB Executive Administration: I am writing to you concerning an offensive post by a student named Matthew Rossy on the CASA-JMSB Facebook Student Group on November 13th 2014. The post is a picture of what appears to be an Asian single mother accompanied by her young son, studying in the empty hallways of JMSB, with the headline: “Never too early for asians in uni.” You will find copy Mr. Rossy’s post and the student comments in response to said post, attached herewith. Mr. Rossy used University property to exploit that unknown woman’s image and that of her son’s for a cheap laugh. The post was clearly racist and ignorant; many students who took offense to his post and understood it as public mockery urged him to remove it. Nevertheless, the post remained online for over 7 hours for public display to all people on the World Wide Web- including the 7756 members of the CASA-JMSB Facebook Student Group. I am dumbfounded that Mr. Rossy did not have the decency to remove the post, even attempting to justify his egregious behaviour under the guise of “humour.” I am equally outraged that the administrators of CASA-JMSB Facebook Student Group did not delete the post in a timely manner, since such reprehensible conduct by a student member also puts the University’s reputation at stake. As an Asian single mother who is back in school myself, I take offense to Mr. Rossy’s post and urge JMSB administration to take appropriate disciplinary measures with regards to this matter. Rules of proper conduct should be enforced on social media forums associated to the University. Administrators of CASA-JMSB Facebook Student Group should be vigilant and monitor the postings on their site; offensive and inappropriate posts should be immediately removed. Furthermore, it is well-known that Concordia University’s motto is “Well-being through harmony.” It is apparent, however, that Mr. Rossy fails to understand the importance other students such as myself place on having a sense of community, security, and belonging when attending this educational institution. If the student body is a reflection of the University, Mr. Rossy’s extreme judgmental character and narrow-mindedness to social realities only undermines JMSB’s image. At this point in time, the best education the University can give Mr. Rossy is to suspend him from the faculty for a reasonable period time --- it will teach him an unforgettable lesson about life, respect, and humility. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
