To Monica and Paul Killeen, there’s little doubt that their girl Stella is mischievous; the one-year-old Chihuahua Terrier cross demonstrates that fact on a daily basis. It’s this characteristic, alongside her playful, inquisitive nature, that the Killeen family heartily welcomes — celebrates, in fact. After all, Stella’s spunky curiosity is a far cry from the frightened, timid creature they first spotted on Big and Small’s website just four months ago. While Stella’s story bears a few sadly familiar notes (she was found abandoned; Big and Small rescued her from a high-kill shelter in California; she was reluctant to trust those around her), she did have two champions in her corner. First, Stella was blessed with her foster Jessica, a woman who was able to ease her transition and slowly draw her out of her shell. Jessica knew instantly that the Killeens were the right family for Stella, and she bonded with Monica and Paul as quickly as Stella herself. Her second advocate? Jerry, the Killeen’s two-year-old Yorkie, a big-personality dog who just happens to occupy a seven-pound body. It was Jerry who welcomed Stella into the pack, who took on the role of protective big brother, playmate and willing partner in crime. And it was Jerry’s instant connection to Stella, alongside the Killeens’ steadfast patience and dedication, that has ensured that this smart, loving creature has not just survived, she’s flourished. And for Monica, that makes perfect sense. In her words, “Stella was just waiting for the opportunity to show her true colours.” Colours, no doubt, that are as bright as her future.
