To My Fellow Malays, I find it commendable that the DAP has decided to field Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, 27 years young, a law graduate from UiTM and a daughter of an UMNO Wanita member. What is interesting is her mother was a member of the “Team B” faction led by Tengku Razaleigh Hamza thus she is a product of the turmoil of the 1987 UMNO elections. I can understand her anti UMNO stance and the huge political risk she is taking based on what she had witnessed her mother experiencing. However, as a member of the Malaysian electorate and a Malay I have a few concerns - Would the nomination of Dyana Sofya provoke the conservative right wing factions within the Ruling Coalition for many years to come thus ushering a new wave of racial tension? PAS, the champions of Hudud, has not commented on their coalition partner’s choice of not wearing a Hijab combined with the Deputy PM speaking of liberal politics damaging Islamic tradition and open invitation for PAS to enter BN and unite the Malays? Or are we still seeing the political contradiction from PAS with regards to their firebrand bedmate? With DAP fielding a Malay, the Malays are now forced to choose between PAS which champions Islamic Law, PKR which champions Justice and a revamp of the judiciary, UMNO which champions economic prosperity to the Malays first and then other races or DAP which champions a meritocratic society for all races. We will have a further split of the Malays. Currently Malays need to unite for the benefit of the other races. How can the Chinese and Indians co-exist with us if we are infighting? How long can a young Malay girl last in DAP before the Central Committee of the Party tires her like it did with Tunku Aziz? In terms of progress, I commend DAP for taking a step forward to bring a fresh face and promote a young ambitious Malay however the undercurrents that will stem from this nomination is what worries me. For progress to occur Malaysia first needs to be stable within us Malays before reaching a consensus with other races.
