To New Catahoula Breeders: Before Breeding, You should determine who is going to be obtaining your puppies, or where you are going to place them. Lately, I’ve seen puppies being offered for $200 each, and wonder what are they thinking. The time that goes into breeding a quality puppy, and then taking quality care is time consuming and costly. Your time is just as costly as the price you place on a puppy. What this indicates to me is that they have purchased two dogs, possibly from good stock, but I can’t say one way or the other, placed them together, and BAM they’ve got registered pups. It’s a bit more than that, and time will prove me right. Once you add up the time involved in caring for a litter, food, additives, veterinary costs, registration, you’ve spent more than you will ever bring in. Even when giving your own shots, which also must be purchased, has to be added into the cost of a litter. You may feel like you’ve beat the Breeder’s Dilemma, but I’m willing to bet that there was little to no research into what would be produced. Not just color, but hearing, temperament, structure, movement, health, teeth, and eyes, and I don’t mean eye color. I mean eye defects. Allowing any defect to be passed on in a puppy that could be bred only brings greater problems to the BREED. Yes, I started in the same manner as every other breeder, but I have taken the time and work to study my lines and the lines that I use. It is not an overnight success story. Question every aspect of your breeding pair, their parents, grandparents, and great grandparents, and every sibling in each of their litters. In this manner, you learn what is being passed on in your dogs. Not just the Flashy dog, or the all-out Working fool, but every aspect of each dog within the line you are creating. You’ll learn that cheap prices may get puppies out of your yard fast, but, you may also be one of those contributing to the problems that breeders who are dedicated to the breed are trying to solve.
