To Our Patrons - Our little theater has gotten quite a bit of media attention over the past few of days in connection with Sony Pictures controversial new film The Interview. As you may have heard, wed expressed interest in screening the film on Christmas Day as we agreed with President Obama when he stated: We cannot have a society in which some dictator someplace can start imposing censorship here in the United States. If somebodys able to intimidate folks out of releasing a satirical movie, imagine what they start doing when they see a documentary they dont like, or news reports they dont like. Or even worse, imagine if producers and distributors and others start engaging in self-censorship because they dont want to offend the sensibilities of someone whose sensibilities probably need to be offended. Screening this film was not something we took lightly. We understood the concerns our customers were likely to have and took many steps to ensure their safety, including contacting local law enforcement and the local branch of the FBI to confirm they had no objections to our screening of the film. Ultimately, these steps proved unnecessary as Sony has decided to release the film through traditional distribution channels. In other words, The Interview will now be showing in first run-theaters. Independent second-run theaters such as ours will now have to wait our turn, after the first-run theaters are done with it, to show it. When exactly that is? We do not know. It is up to the first-run theaters. This is a big disappointment for us.
