I met Bill Stern about 15 years ago on a visit to the Poodle Club of America’s National Specialty. My trip from Sydney Australia to LA then after a few hours delay to Washington and then a few hours more by mini bus to my destination left me exhausted and jet lagged. With the time distances affecting my medication regime my blood sugar was low and I was disorientated at the show, when this kindly fellow asked me was I OK and gave me a couple of his cookies and then returned with fresh orange juice and stayed with me until I recovered. All that week he kept an eye on me and supplied me with cookies in case I needed them. He told me how he started making cookies for his nieces who were at college and were homesick and how his original Standard Poodle loved them as well. Just prior to one of the PCA Nationals his Poodle died and heartbroken, he baked a batch of his dog’s favourite cookies and went to PCA offering them to the Poodles doing obedience in return for a hug. This act of generosity rewarded him with hugs and sympathy and started an annual visit to PCA to hand out cookies and best wishes to the exhibitors and their Poodles and he became known as “Cookieman”. On each of my visits Bill has kept an eye on me and always had a special stash of cookies to give me. On one visit in 2005 he and his wife Fran picked up me and a friend who came with me at 11pm at night from the airport and took us to their home for the night and drove us to the National. I was astounded at the amount of cookies he had stored in a large upright freezer to take with us for all the exhibitors at the show. Each one was individually wrapped and boxed and there were several hundred dozens of them. All of them were given out free of charge. Bill/PCA Cookieman also sent me a huge box of his famous cookies to be handed out to our exhibitors and dogs at our Australian National held at the end of March this year. Several of us here in Australia are proud to be classed as Cookieman Associates and were proud to wear his TShirts with his Cookieman Logo.
