To all: Not a good day for sure. Talked with Dr. Amburgy. Dad has 3 issues. The malignant glioblastoma which gives him an expectancy of approx. 12 months if treated w chemo/rad. which he is too weak for. 2 is the thrombosis (clot) he had in his sagittal sinus. People can recover from that, not necessarily fully, but it takes 2 months and more. 3 is the more pressing issue. He is developing encephalitis (fluid on the brain again). They can only put a shunt in if they stop the blood thinners, worsening the blood clots in the brain, and it would not necessarily lengthen his life. If it did it would be as he is now, not improve his state. They cant drain the fluid off just once because it will come back in less than 4 hrs. So, basically at this point, the doctors have given is the choice to attempt to do things that may or may not prolong him in this current state of non responsiveness for possibly a max of 12 mo. or begin with palliative care and comfort care, keeping him comfortable with medication. Dad had told all of us before his brain surgery that if things went bad, he was fine with that. He said he had lived a good life with a great wife, got to see his kids grow up, his grandkids mostly grow up and he absolutely loved his job. He said he had gotten to do everything he ever wanted but retire. (Although he was rethinking the retirement after being off so long and wanting to be back at work lol) So, in keeping with what we know his wishes are, we have decided together to take the option of comfort care only. I dont worry about my dad when he dies, because I know he will be fine and where he will be. It will be hardest on those of us left behind. We will meet with palliative care this afternoon and have decided to look into finding a place in the Shoals that will do that as opposed to the house, to make things easier for mom to deal with. We ask for all your prayers for peace and comfort and thank you for all you have given already. We love you all! Glenn Pruit
