To all Past and Present at the United States Merchant Marine Academy: Last Sunday the Lynbrook Stake was organized. As a result of these wonderful changes the “Merchant Marine Academy was placed in another Stake called the Woodside Stake”. A Stake (From Isaiah 54) can best be compared to an Archdiocese; a Session; Synod, etc. Moving Forward I will no longer have ecclesiastical responsibility for the Academy as far as the Church goes. I have enjoyed the 10 years I was able to serve and watch over our midshipmen. I hope my service is acceptable to all. We will transition the responsibility to the new Branch President and Stake Presidency. We will explain all the support and special needs and considerations and understanding that we feel is needed to support the Midshipmen in fulfilling the Academies Goals. Especially important is assisting Midshipmen who wish to serve an LDS Mission to weed through the policies and procedures to make this happen. We are pleased to report that Elder and Sister Owens will continue to teach Institute on Wednesday nights. I will personally make all appropriate new introductions. I want to thank everyone at the Academy for all the wonderful support and friendship over the years. Feel free to call on me for occasional specific Projects as requested. Very Sincerely, Ralph A.
