To all, Please RSVP for the Peoples Climate March in NYC, on Sept 21st, at the link below or in the Sierra Club link at the bottom of this email Come with me to the biggest climate change march ever? so that the organizers have an idea of how many people are coming -- it will help with the planning of the march and will make it run smoother. So please respond at this site: peoplesclimate.org/march/ The Peoples Climate March is shaping up really wonderfully, they have a great route, stepping off at 11:30 am, but congregating before then, they are passing Times Square and have arranged to take over the big tele monitor in the Square. They are organizing in hubs, so folks can join up with others from across the country who have similar priorities for the climate issues Get involved with the Peoples Climate March peoplesclimate.org/organizing/ There is a Global Climate Convergence Fri, 9/19th and Sat, 9/20 with great guests such as Vandana Shiva. they are asking $50 donation but will take what you can give, Perspectives on Fighting Global Warming | Converge for Climate. convergeforclimate.org/ Besides the Global Climate Convergence there is a Sat, Sept 20th evening event at Ethical Culture called A Global Climate Treaty: Why the US Must Lead. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is calling on world governments to commit to an ambitious, legally binding agreement in 2015 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our program will focus on why we need an international treaty and why it is critical for us to mobilize support to demand that the U.S. assume a leading role in the treaty negotiations. For more information, see: 350nyc.org And there is a whole week of actions after the Climate March at the UN and around NYC: climateweeknyc.org/get-involved/social/ I have gotten criticism that the message of the Peoples Climate March is unclear -- actually I see that as a good thing so that all of the attendees and groups can have their own messages. The Peoples Climate March, on the eve of the UN Climate Talks in NYC, is about Taking Action on the Climate. There are 1000s of actions that governments could take: --Canada could end the horrific Tar Sands Oil production --China could close all of its coal fired power plants and replace them with wind and solar. --The US could end all of their wars for oil and natural gas in the Mideast and beyond, and move to converting their entire automobile and trucking industry to electric -- and proceed with a WPA for the building of renewable energy across the country, while making fracking illegal. --All the countries engaging in geoengineering could end those ridiculously untested programs and move to renewable energy as fast as possible. --etc, etc, etc So you can see the specific calls for action are as numerous as the attendees. Here is a recent conference call recording about the Climate March with Naomi Klein that discusses this issue: https://soundcloud/peoplesclimate/peoples-climate-march-call-with-naomi-klein Please come to the Peoples Climate March, Sept 21st and add your demands into the mix of demands. Your demands can be sent to the UN by going here: un.org/climatechange/summit/ or tweeting at #climate2014 But your attendance at the Peoples Climate March is the most important action you can take.
