To all dog owners: I am sharing this so that, if you did not - TopicsExpress

To all dog owners: I am sharing this so that, if you did not already know, you can be aware of a very real threat to your dogs that may be in your home. We had heard of the dangers of dogs and xylitol, which is in many sugar-free chewing gums. So much so that Stephen and I had both done a thorough sweep of the house to assure there was none available for our four-legged children to get into. We THOUGHT it was all gone. But Truvy, who is the equivalent of an inquisitive, newly walking toddler with a hearty appetite and unquenchable desire to chew, found herself a pack of Trident gum. With xylitol. Stephen and I found the empty pack last night. Even after questioning, no one was telling who had eaten what. Although everyone kept looking at Truvy. So we called the animal version of poison control and ended up taking Truvy, Ramona, Riley, and Sheldon to the emergency vet in the middle of the night last night. After the emptying of each dogs stomach, we found at that Truvy was indeed the party girl and Ramona had managed to score a few pieces herself. Riley and Sheldon had remained good boys, although I suspect it was because the girls just dont share. Truvy had at least five times the lethal dose. Ramona had some too, but not as much. After spending the night at the vet, we got to bring Riley and Sheldon home as the sun was rising. Ramona and Truvy will be spending another night in the hospital under observation with some nice IV drips and blood sugar checks every few hours. We were very fortunate that we caught it as early as we did. The vet that we saw last night said that he had been unable to save his own beloved dog when it had gotten into the same situation. The threat is very real. Xylitol consumption can and will kill your dog. I am finding out today that not many people know this. Let us be a lesson to you. Get the gum out of the reach of your dog and spare yourself the heartache of losing, or almost losing, your fur baby and a large four-figure vet bill. Thanking God tonight that we will be able to bring them home tomorrow!
