To all my friends and colleagues who have wished me well and who have posted their kind comments on Facebook in reference to the recognition by the Faculty of Health Sciences of my contribution to the development of the Faculty, the discipline of Public Health in Lebanon and the Region, kindly accept my very sincere thanks and appreciation. I am overwhelmed by your kindness and your remarks. The celebration by the Faculty of Health Sciences of its 60th anniversary signals in fact the passing of the torch of public health to the third generation. The first from 1954 to 1974 witnessed the devotion of the first pioneers such as Dr Jamal Harfouche, Dr Joseph Azar, Dr Aftim Acra and Dr Gabriel Rifka. The second generation (1974 to 2014) that has been honored includes Dr Nadim Haddad, Dean Eugene Gangarosa, Dr Haroutune Armenian, Dr Huda Zurayk and myself. The third generation includes the current leadership (Dr Iman Nuwayhid, Dr Rima Afifi as well as the entire active current faculty members. This generation will carry the torch to even greater heights. This reminds me what I used to say to my students “Individuals come and go – institutions remain”. Sincere congratulations to FHS in its 60th anniversary, to AUB in its forthcoming 150th anniversary and to Public Health all over Lebanon and the Region.
