To all of my fellow New York City educators: As we prepare our students for this rigorous week, and month, of testing, please remember this: The time, energy, compassion, dedication, and patience that you provide effortlessly on the day to day, is immeasurable to these few days of testing. One test should never be the sole determining factor for the quality of education that is delivered throughout the school year. There are positive, indelible moments that occur within the classroom that stay with a young person for life. Our vocation is one of few that finds its true reward not in the form of a bulky, overtime check, or a year end bonus. The true reward comes from the end result of molding a young person holistically; shaping both mind and spirit to feel empowered, worthy, and validated in a world that may often overlook their greatness and ability. It is a reward of knowing that your students have a powerful sense of confidence in their ability to succeed both academically and socially. This, by far, is the most profound investment that we can make, with a tangible return of knowing that a life has been affected, simply by you being present, by being a conduit for knowledge to flow, and for sharing a passion that inspires a young mind to color outside of the lines, and to visualize and begin to believe in the importance of their purpose. I work with and know so many beautiful and passionate educators who value the children they teach as if they were their own. As the proverb says, It takes a whole village to raise a nation, so keep on keepin on.
