To all of my friends and followers, I try to offer the best advice I can with this new adventure Ive taken with massage. For example, theres no evidence that massage can reduce or eliminate toxins from the body. Thats the job of your liver and kidneys (so dont fall for any marketing of detoxing regimens or supplements - just eat well). Also, Chaudhry et al. (2008) showed that forces outside of the physiological range (what were capable of with our hands) only changed heavy duty tissues like the fascia lata and plantar fascia by 1%. Which means that if there are noticeable changes in how you move and feel in only one therapy session, those changes are driven by the nervous system (remember: trigger points and adhesions arent found in cadavers). This is also true with foam rolling - the influence could very well be with decreasing pain sensitivity, and less about actual tissue change. I tend to say neural tone or neural tension when talking about what I might feel, which is my way of saying I am trying to figure out how to get your brain to make the tender area I find reduce its tension or tone. Think about how breathing drills are starting to become popular - your diaphragm and breathing influences the autonomic nervous system. Improve the neural tone in your diaphragm, improve your breathing and bracing, and all of a sudden you can improve range-of-motion in areas like your hip flexors and/or hamstrings without stretching them or warming them up. Improve your brains communication with your body and youll improve your movement and pain sensitivity, thereby allowing you to make better gains in the gym. A physical therapist posted a Facebook status that I share on Twitter, so I wanted to share it with you all: https://twitter/JeromiePreas/status/428904940640018432/photo/1
