To all the campers in our parks I stand in solidarity with you! We who have homes, a place to lay our heads, a toilet to sit on, food in our cupboards, how can we be so judgmental, so legalistic, so oppressive towards the campers who have nothing. How can we support moving then on? How can we refuse them a place to lay their heads? We miss the bigger questions that affect all of us, the lack of affordable housing in Victoria, the issue of poverty that we face in our city of affluence. In spite of the Coalition to end homelessness, in spite of our efforts, the fact remains that the Federal or Provincial government have not made a commitment to end homelessness in British Columbia or indeed in Canada. Ethically, morally spiritually, and politically let’s support the less fortunate. Remember the more we support, the more we stand in solidarity with the week and the destitute in our community the more of a just society we will be for all. The gap between the rich and the poor in this city is the elephant in the room. Many of our middle-class families are losing ground quickly struggling to pay bills and to feed their families. Is this really the city the country that our forbearers have fought for. The campers and the homeless are the visible signs of our politics, policies and economic system; they are a cry in the wilderness we are going the wrong direction.. We may well move them away from our precious green grass however their numbers are growing and they are not going away. They are our brothers and our sisters; we would be wise to listen to them. Other countries have not listened to the poor and oppressed. Let us open or eyes and see where that has taken them today.
