To appreciate the range of Philip Seymour Hoffmans work, think of Truman Capote. His prissiness, that voice, the erudite, Southern charm. Now think of Willy Loman. Plainspoken. Common. Filled with frustration and anger. These were his two signature roles and that fact alone shows what a singular, versatile talent he was. He was also amazingly effective in supporting parts. I first appreciated this after watching THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY. The three leading actors were Jude Law, Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow. Not chopped liver. But it was Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman in smaller roles that stayed with me. Hoffman was a character actor who became a star, like Claude Rains in the studio era. They are few and far between and he will be missed. R. I. P.
