To attract qualified young men and women to become officers in the three services, the government needs to offer them a better quality of life in terms if housing, facilities and alternate career preparation. We must induct more short service officers and then laterally move them into the civil and police services, PSUs and banks, without loss of seniority. Many of the so-called forward stations like Tawang, Leh and Rajouri can easily become family cantonments. Officers and other ranks need top quality schooling and guaranteed admissions. Service conditions can be made more officer and other ranks friendly and must factor social conditions outside the services. The military should begin a major step up in building top class accomodation for all its officers and men.
