To be aired on News12 April 11/12 -- John Hall (and Marshall Brown) interviewed by Danielle Campbell, News12 anchor, on proper lawn care and gardening tips as we head into the spring. We were both unequivocally pro organic, noting that we live on top of our drinking water, that grass clippings and mulched leaves are really all you need to feed the lawn, but that the much larger threat is the septic tanks, and what we are doing by getting away from high nitrogen fertilizers is to buy time for our bays while we tackle the bigger problem. John was great, a true practitioner of growing an organic lawn and home gardening. Here in the course of my research, I found information on a DEC program -- Be Green Organic Yards NY -- dec.ny.gov/public/65071.html -- doesnt roll off the tongue, I know, but what they DO have is a list of approved organic service providers for lawn and garden care. If you want your children and pets playing on your lawn, if you want nothing added to our groundwater from your lawn, this is a great way to act on a personal basis to improve our groundwater situation. I agree with John Hall -- one of the most radical acts we could perpetrate right now would be to convert a section of your lawn into an organic garden. Long Island invented the suburban lawn. It must also reinvent it.
