To be anti-semitic: I was wondering where the definition of anti-semitic came from and why it has come to mean anti-Jew when we all know that culturally and linguistically Jews, Arabs and many others are all in the same boat. The Palestinian is as much a Semite as an Israeli - in some cases perhaps even more so. This idea of a Semite arose along with the idea of an Aryan in comparative philology from the end of the 18th century and was taken up by German (and other, racists: Aryans are superior to Semites and all that BS). Well if you really want to find real Aryans look to Iran - even the name Eryana means Land of the Aryans - and look to India - where the Sanskrit Arya apparently designated the worshippers of the Brahmanic gods. It really is quite funny how thuggish Neo-Nazis in Ukraine (and elsewhere) proudly think of themselves as Aryans. Terms such as Semitic or Aryan have unfortunately been highjacked (if they ever were a good idea) and need to be re-claimed. To be called an anti-semite in speaking out about the brutalization of the Palestinians (or any on the so-called Semitic cultural and linguistic groups) is fundamentally silly. Palestinians should start calling actions that deprive them of their human rights as anti-Semitic, it is no less so than people trying to deprive Israelis of their human rights - and NO I am not saying that the deprivation is equal in this latest Gaza tragedy.
