To be honest Yaya Toure does not deserve to be African Footballer of the Year. Since CAF took over the African footballer of the Year in 1992 from French based Magazine FRANCE FOOTBALL they have rewarded players solely based on their form in another confederations competitions. This is strange and only CAF do this, taking a look at South America you will find that Messi has never won the South American player of the year, this is simply because there are better players who are performing in South American tournaments. Granted that CAF may be under pressure to reward a player who can be easily marketed. But one wonders why CAF never market thier own tournaments, how many people watch the CAF Champions league or CAF Confederations Cup? Both dont even have their own programs to profile players. So the problem starts with CAF, every other federation does their part to promote their own game except CAF. Question is, what did Yaya Toure achieve in CAF related competitions in 2014 or interms of helping his National team? Nothing! Yet Toure has been rewarded for performing in another Confederations Competitions. im not saying that Yaya is not a talented player. Yes Yaya deserves to be the European Based African Fotballer of the Year no doubt, but CAF needs a rethink with how it gives awards.
