To be or not to be... That is the question. -Hamlet The question as of late is if common core is actually responsible for the raunchy reading material that came home from school with a middle school student in Iberia Parish, Louisiana this past week. To all who say that we cant blame this on common core, Id like to share the following that was written by a mom from south Louisiana. She does a fantastic job of connecting the dots for us. Anna says: It is not accurate to state that CC only sets standards. When the CC standards are tied to the assessments which are then tied to teacher/school district accountability, the reality is that what CC recommends on their reading lists will be taught. The owners of the CC standards will by default have more control over what our children will read/learn because our school boards will feel compelled to have their schools teach as close to the CC standards as possible. If CC is only standards, then why did the owners of these standards create publisher criteria to send to the textbook companies to instruct them how to make their textbooks follow the standards. The creators of CC had the full intent to go beyond controlling standards. They wanted to direct and control pedagogy and curriculum as well. This is an example of that.
