To be ready for the next severe weather event, then this is a must - TopicsExpress

To be ready for the next severe weather event, then this is a must read! Learning from severe weather is the best thing we can do after-the-fact. I just sat through an amazing discussion on the effects of Atlantas SnowJam 2014. In the Tri-State, as a large metro area, we go through some of the same issues that Atlanta faces every winter season. The presentation that I just sat through should be mandatory for all emergency management personnel, broadcasters and school officials in our area. The devastating effects on the Atlanta metro area provides an educational opportunity so that other communities can be ready when similar weather events happen. While only receiving 2.6 of snow this past January 28th, the effects were devastating. Heres the most important factors to remember..municate the threat and take the threat seriously by making preparations before the event happens. The keys: broadcast meteorologists need to communicate the threat level immediately and often, emergency management personnel need to put a plan in place even before things go sideways, school officials should not wait to make decisions until the last moment. Dr. Laura Myers from the University of Alabama gave an excellent presentation. Below youll see some of the slides that she used from a survey of state officials, broadcasters and the public. Most importantly take a look at how the public perceives a threat when it first happened and how things change after watches warnings, advisories are issued. Additionally, youll see the confusion on the difference between all three types of statements. Ultimately, her Myers survey the public needs to do a better job to be prepared and to take that thread more seriously. Finally, this is just a thumbnail of the entire presentation that knocked my socks off from a learning standpoint. I will be in touch with Dr. Myers and will hope to post her entire presentation soon.
