To become a fast playing drummer and maintain your playing for long periods of time, add this to your practice sessions. Before you even pick up your sticks, put on loose fitting clothes, sit down, with a 10 lb. dumbbell start by holding it with your elbow resting on your leg and your hand facing palm up. Do 3 sets of 15 wrist curls, then reverse wrist curls. Next do flexor and extensor exercises – 2 sets of 10. Now let’s move on to biceps. Use 5 lb. dumbbells and do fast curls, 3 sets of 15 – make sure you concentrate on your breathing. Next do triceps extensions 3 sets of 15 slowly. Finish up with Deltoid flies, 4 sets of 10, standing on all exercises, no bending over. These exercises won’t build up your muscles but it will tone them immensely. I did this exercise for a half hour before each practice and it got to the point that my hands could reach to anywhere on my drum set quickly and effortlessly. I never became a teacher and that’s due to me never taking lessons but I studied drummers of all styles so I was able to incorporate rock, jazz, Afro Cuban, Bossa Nova, a lot of Latin drumming. I did play to Rush, from their 2112 album all the way up to Hold Your Fire, and I did it for 20+ years, then I wanted to be more puppet style when I played so I transitioned over to Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater and I learned to master their Images & Words album. If you’re determined, consistent and build up your stamina then you can advance your drum playing as far as you desire. I hope my exercise routine helps out your drum playing. Sincerely, Musical Techie
