To better understand the video posted here by Kara Johnstad about the Theremins orchestra: this is the original Theremin, played by the inventor Leon Theremin who built the first device in the far 1919 ! In effect this is the very first electronic music device of the history not controlled by phisical contact ! The instruments controlling section consists of two metal antennas which sense the relative position of the performers hands and control oscillators for frequency with one hand, and amplitude (volume) with the other. The electric signals from the theremin are then amplified and sent to a loudspeaker. All this make this device a very espressive musical instrument. The Theremin was used in a lot of movie soundtracks, especially in old suspense and science fiction movie, you surely will recognize the sound!
