To celebrate this week’s TBT I am thinking about my first trip - TopicsExpress

To celebrate this week’s TBT I am thinking about my first trip to Africa. During a lunch with pastor friend Terry Wilcox, he spoke of his upcoming trip to Africa. While he told me the story of purchasing a 10,000 acre farm in Zambia to be used for ministry, I began to think how I could go with him. I sold my motorhome to finance the trip, and when I told my plans to my small group, Dennis Myers said, “I’m going with you. During my first breakfast in Africa, the leader said, “All the pastors in the group are going hut to hut visitation today in a neighboring town. That night at supper as the leader was giving out the assignments for the next day, he said, “Dan, go pack your bag-I am taking you tonight to a village to preach a revival for the rest of the week at Pastor Leonard Jambo’s church.” Going off road through tall elephant grass we came to a thatched roof church-totally in the dark. The driver dropped me off with my bag and said he would pick me up on Sunday afternoon. My first sermon in Africa was preached with one small flicking light on a stand along with my flashlight to a congregation totally in the dark. After service I was taken to a place to stay and informed that services began at 9AM the next morning and would run all day everyday through Sunday. I was expected to preach all day long with breaks for lunch and supper and back for the evening service. I discovered that there was only 1 Bible for the entire church and when I spoke they had to pass it back and forth. On Sunday, I helped serve communion, dedicated babies and baptized the week’s converts at a slimy, stagnant water hole on a nearby farm. The next week I bought 30 Bibles in Tonga for the church. Dennis and I then fly to Ghana where I taught for a week at the Bible College where my cousin Leroy Adams was principal. That trip to Africa changed my life and was the first of many more trips to Africa. If health would permit, I would leave for Africa immediately to carry the good news of the Gospel. The pictures below tell the story of Dennis and me at unfinished church in Ghana and Pastor Leonard Jambo’s home and church and Sunday dinner with Pastor Jambo in his church.
